Am I too fat to get a massage? (honest answer)

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re “too overweight” to get a massage… you’re not alone.

A lot of people think this, but almost nobody asks it out loud.

So let’s just address it directly.

1.Short answer:

No. Not even close.

Your body size is not a reason to avoid getting a massage.

2.What massage therapists actually care about

This might surprise you, but when it comes to clients, it really comes down to two things:

Basic hygiene

Being respectful

That’s it.

If you come in as you normally would for any appointment and treat the space with respect, you’re already a great client.

Your body type doesn’t factor into it the way you might think it does.

3.What you might be worried about

Most people who ask this are really thinking:

Will this be awkward?

Will I be judged?

Will the therapist feel uncomfortable working on me?

All completely valid thoughts.

But here’s the reality.

4.From the therapist’s side

When I’m working, I’m focused on:

Finding tension

Helping reduce pain

Getting you results

I’m not analyzing your body or judging how you look.

After years of working with all kinds of people, bodies become just bodies. Different shapes, different needs, same goal.

5.Quick side note (because this comes up a lot)

Some clients apologize for things like not shaving their legs or underarms.

You don’t need to.

That’s not something I (or any professional therapist) cares about.

6.Will anything be different?

The only difference is that I may adjust my approach slightly depending on what your body needs.

That’s not a negative thing. That’s literally my job.

Everything else stays the same:

You’re fully draped (if you’re not sure what that means, you can watch out Tiktok video to learn more about how professional massage draping works here).

You’re comfortable

The session is tailored to you

7.What actually makes a “good” client

It’s simple:

You show up as you normally would

You communicate if something needs to change

You’re respectful

That’s it.

Not weight. Not size. Not anything else.

8.A quick reassurance

If this question has been sitting in the back of your mind and stopping you from booking…

You’re not alone.

And you’re definitely not the only person who has thought this before their first session.

If it’s your first time getting a massage, you might also be wondering what to expect—this guide walks you through everything step by step.
