Is a massage awkward the first time? (What actually happens)

If you’ve been putting off getting a massage because you’re worried it might feel awkward… you’re not alone.
This is probably one of the most common thoughts people have before booking their first session—but almost nobody talks about it.
So let’s clear it up.
1.Short answer:
No, it’s not awkward—but it’s completely normal to feel that way at first.
Most of the “awkwardness” comes from not knowing what to expect. Once you understand how it actually works, that feeling usually disappears pretty quickly.
2.What actually happens during your first massage
Plan to arrive about 5–10 minutes before your scheduled time.
Before we even begin, we’ll talk for a few minutes about:
What’s bothering you (neck, shoulders, low back, etc.)
Any injuries or sensitivities
Any areas to avoid or be careful around
What the goal for the session is — how we measure success at the end
When it comes to pressure, most first-time clients aren’t sure what they prefer—and that’s completely normal.
I’ll start with what I feel is appropriate, and you can always ask for more if you want.
And if you need less, I like to joke that our safe word is… “less.”
LESS. LESS!!
Nothing complicated—just a quick conversation so I know how to help you best.
After that, I’ll step out of the room, close the door, and give you complete privacy to get on the table.
When you're ready, you’ll just say “ready!” and I’ll come in and we’ll start.
3.What about undressing?
This is the part people worry about the most.
You undress to your level of comfort.
Fully undressed
Leaving underwear on
Even staying more covered if you prefer
You’ll be fully draped under a sheet and a blanket the entire time, and only the area being worked on is ever uncovered. Have a look at how we drape you during a massage.
As you can see in the linked video, at no point are you exposed.
4.During the massage
Once the massage session starts, most people realize pretty quickly:
“Oh… this is actually really relaxing.”
There’s no pressure to talk, either.
Some people like to chat a bit.
Some people go completely quiet (and even fall asleep and drool on the carpet).
Both are completely normal.
5.Why it feels awkward before—but not during
The anticipation is always worse than the reality.
It’s kind of like going to the gym for the first time or trying anything new—you’re stepping into something unfamiliar.
But once you’re actually in it, it just feels… normal.
And for most people, it quickly becomes something they look forward to (especially after feeling the results).
6.A quick reassurance
If you’re feeling hesitant about booking your first massage because of this—you’re not the only one.
I work with first-time clients all the time, and making sure you feel comfortable is a big part of the process.
You’re always in control of:
The pressure
The areas we work on
Talking or staying quiet
Your level of comfort throughout the session
Even the music (you can bring and play literally whatever playlist you like)
7.If you’re in Round Rock / Pflugerville / North Austin
And you’ve been thinking about getting your first massage session in Round Rock but haven’t booked yet because of this…
This is exactly the kind of thing I help people get past every day.
