If you’re dealing with lower back pain, you’ve probably wondered:
“Should I see a chiropractor… or get a massage?”
It’s a good question.
Both can help. But they do very different things.
Short answer:
It depends on what’s causing your pain.
But in many cases, especially with muscle-related lower back pain, massage is a great place to start.
What’s actually causing most lower back pain
In my experience, most lower back pain comes from tight, overworked muscles, not
something being “out of place.”
Common culprits:
Quadratus lumborum (QL)
Glutes
Other muscles around the hips
Muscles along the spine
When these get tight, they can pull on your lower back and create that familiar:
Achy
Tight
“Something feels off” feeling
That’s what most people are dealing with.
Why some treatments feel good… but don’t last
Some approaches focus on quick relief.
You might feel better for a short period of time, but if the underlying muscle tension isn’t addressed, the discomfort often comes back.
That’s the missing piece for a lot of people.
What massage actually does
Releases muscle tension
Improves circulation
Helps the body move more naturally
When you address the muscles that are causing the pull on your lower back, the relief tends to last longer.
Where the QL comes in
One muscle I see involved all the time is the quadratus lumborum (QL).
It sits deep in the lower back and attaches around:
The 12th rib
The hip bone
When it tightens up, it can create that exact low back pain people complain about.
If that muscle isn’t addressed, the pain usually sticks around.
When a chiropractor might help
Movement feels restricted
There’s a specific joint issue
You’ve had success with that approach before
The key difference
Massage focuses on muscles.
Chiropractic care focuses more on joints.
So where should you start?
For the average person dealing with everyday lower back tension, massage is usually the
better place to start.
Especially if your pain:
Builds over time
Gets worse with sitting
Feels tight or achy
That pattern is usually muscle-related.
If this would be your first professional massage, we also created a blog post walking you through exactly what to expect during your first massage session — from arrival to treatment to draping and comfort.
The best approach (honest answer)
It’s not always one or the other.
In some cases, the best results come from combining both:
Massage to address the muscles
Chiropractic care to address joint movement
But if you’re not sure where to start, massage is often the more comfortable and
straightforward first step.
A quick reassurance
If you’ve been dealing with lower back pain and aren’t sure what you need…
You’re not expected to figure it all out on your own.
That’s part of my job.
If you’ve never had a professional massage before, it’s completely normal to have questions about privacy and draping. We actually made a quick TikTok video explaining exactly how massage draping works so you know what to expect before your appointment.
If you’re in Round Rock / Pflugerville / North Austin
And your lower back has been bothering you…
There’s a good chance it’s coming from muscle tension in areas like the QL, glutes, or
surrounding muscles.
That’s something we can work through.
