Is deep tissue massage supposed to hurt? (honest answer)

If you’ve ever had a deep tissue massage, or you’re thinking about getting one, you’ve probably wondered this:

“Is it supposed to hurt?”

Short answer?

Deep tissue massage is not supposed to hurt.

That might surprise you, especially if you’ve heard things like:

No pain, no gain

It has to hurt to work

If you’re not sore after, it didn’t do anything

That’s not how it works.

2.Where the confusion comes from

There is a sensation that can feel intense sometimes.

People often describe it as:

  • “good pain”

  • pressure that feels like it’s doing something

And that’s real.

But there’s a big difference between:

  • Effective pressure

  • Pain that makes you tense up or pull away

3.Here’s the rule I use

If your body is tightening, guarding, or you feel like you need to hold your breath…

It means I’m using too much pressure.

At that point, your body is no longer relaxing. It’s protecting itself.

And when that happens, the work actually becomes less effective.

So if you feel that, bring it to my attention. I’ll adjust right away.

4.What deep tissue should feel like

  • Controlled

  • Intentional

  • Productive

Not overwhelming.

You should be able to:

  • Breathe normally

  • Stay relatively relaxed

  • Let the muscle release, not fight back

  • And actually enjoy it. Yes, really.

5.Why more pressure is not always better

More pressure does not mean better results.

In fact, too much pressure can:

  • Cause your muscles to tighten

  • Leave you overly sore

  • And even bruise you

Sometimes, slightly less pressure actually gets better results.

6.What I tell my clients

Most people don’t actually know what “too much” feels like until they experience it.

So I’ll usually start with what I feel is appropriate and adjust from there.

If you want more, you can ask for more.

And if you need less… our safe word is “less”

7.What about soreness after?

Some soreness can happen, especially if:

This is similar to what happens when you go to the gym after taking time off.

Your muscles get worked, and the next day they feel it.

Same idea here.

Even though you weren’t the one doing the work, the muscles were still stimulated, and your body responds in a similar way.

But it should be mild.

If you feel like you got hit by a truck the next day, that usually means the pressure was too much.

8.A quick reassurance

You’re always in control during the session.

That includes:

The pressure

The areas we work on

Speaking up if something doesn’t feel right

If anything feels off, bring it to my attention and I’ll adjust right away.

If you’re new to massage, another common question is about comfort and privacy during the session.

I actually put together a quick video explaining exactly how draping works so you know what to expect. You can watch our massage draping video on TikTok here.

9.If you’re in Round Rock / Pflugerville / North Austin

And you’ve been avoiding deep tissue massage because you think it’s going to hurt…

It doesn’t have to.

And it shouldn’t.
